The breed
Where the Aussiedoodle comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.
About the Aussiedoodle
The Aussiedoodle is an Australian Shepherd x Poodle cross, so the useful starting point is not a single fixed breed standard but the two parent breeds and the actual parents of the litter. Some are medium, athletic, and curly-coated; others are leggier, wavier-coated, more herding-driven, or closer to a Poodle in build. Generation matters, but even F1B or multigenerational labels do not guarantee coat, size, allergy tolerance, or temperament.
Living with an Aussiedoodle is usually best for active homes that enjoy training. Many are smart, people-focused, playful, and energetic, with a mix of Poodle trainability and Australian Shepherd problem-solving. That can be excellent in agility, trick training, scent work, or hiking homes, but it can also produce a dog that herds children, barks at movement, worries when under-socialized, or invents jobs when bored.
Health planning should follow both parent breeds rather than assuming hybrid vigor makes the dog healthier. Local data flags hip dysplasia, MDR1 drug sensitivity from the Aussie side, PRA, Addison's disease, and epilepsy. Poodles bring eye disease, Addison's, sebaceous adenitis in some lines, hips, and knees depending on size. Australian Shepherds bring hips, eyes, epilepsy, MDR1 sensitivity, and merle-associated hearing or eye concerns when merle genetics are involved.
Living with an Aussiedoodle
Aussiedoodles are often bright, affectionate, alert, and busy. Many do well with children and other dogs when well socialized, but herding, chasing, mouthing, and motion sensitivity can show up. They are not reliably low-energy companion dogs.
Training should start early with calm greetings, settle skills, recall, leash manners, cooperative grooming, and reinforcement-based impulse control. Alone-time can be difficult for some because both parent breeds are people-oriented and intelligent.
Daily care
Feeding, exercise, and coat — plus how the routine shifts from puppy to senior.
Feeding an Aussiedoodle
Aussie × Poodle. Calorie needs vary with adult size, sex, and activity; active hybrids need quality fuel.
Key nutrients
- —high-quality protein
- —omega-3
- —joint support
Portion notes: Two meals daily; adjust for size and activity.
Exercise & enrichment
Aussiedoodles need daily exercise plus brain work. The right amount varies by size, age, and parent mix, so feed to body condition and actual workload rather than a fixed calorie range. Keep growing puppies on age-appropriate exercise and avoid repetitive high-impact jumping while joints develop.
Grooming routine
Coat care varies widely. Wavy and curly coats can mat quickly and usually need brushing to the skin several times a week plus professional grooming. Straighter coats may shed more. Check ears after water play, brush teeth, trim nails, and watch for skin irritation under mats or dense coat.
The Aussiedoodle through the years
Aussiedoodle puppies need socialization, grooming-table practice, crate comfort, calm handling, and early work on jumping, chasing, barking, and mouthiness.
Adult Aussiedoodles need regular training, coat maintenance, measured meals, and monitoring for seizures, eye changes, drug-sensitivity history, itching, lameness, or behavior changes.
Senior Aussiedoodles benefit from lower-impact exercise, dental care, arthritis support, eye checks, and prompt evaluation of appetite, mobility, vision, or neurologic changes.
