The breed
Where the English Springer Spaniel comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.
About the English Springer Spaniel
The English Springer Spaniel is a flushing spaniel bred to find, spring, and retrieve game in close partnership with a handler. The breed has both field and show lines, and the difference can matter: field-bred Springers may be lighter, faster, and more intense, while show-bred dogs often carry more coat and a somewhat different outline. Both are active sporting dogs.
Living with a Springer is easiest when the household enjoys training, wet walks, and a dog that wants to be involved. They are typically cheerful, affectionate, and eager, but they can become chaotic if their exercise and scenting needs are ignored. The long ears and feathered coat also make maintenance part of normal ownership, not an occasional polish.
Health claims should stay grounded. Local data flags hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA, ear infections, phosphofructokinase deficiency, and autoimmune diseases. Long pendulous ears reduce airflow and can retain moisture, which may predispose to infections, and PFK deficiency is a documented inherited metabolic disorder in the breed. The controversial topic sometimes called Springer rage is not treated here as a breed trait.
Living with an English Springer Spaniel
English Springer Spaniels are usually friendly, playful, obedient, and eager to work. They often do well with children and other dogs when given exercise and manners, but high-drive adolescents can be bouncy and mouthy. Trainability is high; they like food, toys, scent, and handler interaction.
Harsh handling can create avoidance or frantic behavior, so clear reward-based training works best. Barking may occur from excitement, alerting, or boredom. Alone-tolerance improves when the dog has had real work first, but many Springers are too social to thrive with long isolation.
Daily care
Feeding, exercise, and coat — plus how the routine shifts from puppy to senior.
Feeding an English Springer Spaniel
Active sporting breed. Calorie needs vary by size, age, and field workload; feed to body-condition score. Ear health and joint support are primary concerns.
Key nutrients
- —omega-3
- —glucosamine
- —high-quality protein
Portion notes: Two meals daily; adjust for field vs show activity.
Exercise & enrichment
Springers need daily exercise that lets them move, sniff, and use their brain. A tired Springer is usually a lovely house dog; an underworked one may invent jobs. Check ears after swimming, baths, or wet field work.
Grooming routine
Brush several times a week, especially ears, chest, belly, legs, and tail feathering. Keep the inside of the ears dry and clean as directed by your vet, and check after swimming or rainy walks. Many Springers need periodic trimming around feet and ears. Nail trims, dental care, and tick checks should be routine.
The English Springer Spaniel through the years
Springer puppies need early recall games, crate training, grooming practice, ear handling, bite inhibition, and calm exposure to children, water, field cover, and household noise.
Adult Springers need vigorous daily activity, ear care, measured meals, and monitoring for lameness, eye changes, exercise intolerance, dark urine after exertion, or recurrent infections.
Senior Springers benefit from adjusted exercise, pain checks, ear and skin monitoring, non-slip surfaces, and eye exams. Keep scent games in the routine even when mileage decreases.
Health

Health concerns to watch
Long pendulous ears reduce airflow and can retain moisture, which may predispose to infections; regular checks and cleaning help.
Active sporting breed needs real daily exercise (1-2 hours).
Field-bred lines need more exercise than show lines.
