The breed
Where the Whippet comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.
About the Whippet
The Whippet is an English sighthound developed for speed, rabbit hunting, and later racing and coursing. It looks delicate because it is lean and fine-skinned, but the breed is a real athlete: explosive over short distances, quiet at home, and deeply attached to comfort and people.
Living with a Whippet is often easier than living with many high-energy breeds, provided owners understand sighthound management. Many Whippets are calm indoors, affectionate, and quiet, but outside they can switch instantly into chase mode. Secure fencing, safe sprint areas, coats in cold weather, and protection from rough play matter.
Health planning should stay measured. The American Whippet Club describes Whippets as generally healthy but still recommends screening for cardiac disease, deafness, and eye disorders. Local data flags mitral valve disease, eye problems, deafness, von Willebrand's disease, and anesthetic sensitivity. For anesthesia, the practical point is to tell the veterinarian the dog is a sighthound so modern, appropriate protocols are used; it is not a reason to avoid necessary care.
Living with a Whippet
Whippets are usually affectionate, playful, calm indoors, and quiet compared with many breeds. They can be good with gentle children but are thin-skinned and not built for rough wrestling.
Many enjoy other dogs, especially other sighthounds, but small pets and wildlife can trigger prey drive. Training should be positive and gentle; harsh handling can make them shut down. Recall is difficult around fast-moving targets, so safe containment is essential.
Daily care
Feeding, exercise, and coat — plus how the routine shifts from puppy to senior.
Feeding a Whippet
Lean sighthound. Calorie needs vary with size, age, and sprint workload. Naturally thin — don't overfeed trying to 'fill them out.'
Key nutrients
- —high-quality protein
- —omega-3
Portion notes: Two meals daily. Don't force-feed to bulk up — they're meant to be lean.
Exercise & enrichment
Whippets need daily walks plus chances for safe, enclosed sprinting. They do not need endless mileage, but they do need to stretch and run safely. Feed to lean body condition; visible outline and a tucked waist are normal for the breed, while trying to bulk them up can create problems.
Grooming routine
The short coat is simple: weekly brushing, nail trims, dental care, and occasional baths. The bigger job is protection. Thin skin can tear during rough play or brushy runs, and Whippets often need coats in cold weather. Check feet, nails, eyes, and small cuts after exercise.
The Whippet through the years
Whippet puppies need safe surfaces, socialization, recall games in secure areas, crate comfort, and protection from high-impact jumps while growing.
Adult Whippets need secure sprint outlets, lean meals, dental care, and monitoring for murmurs, coughing, fainting, eye changes, hearing issues, or unusual bleeding.
Senior Whippets benefit from cardiac monitoring, dental care, warm bedding, non-slip flooring, lower-impact activity, and prompt attention to weight loss or weakness.

Health concerns to watch
Anesthetic sensitivity — inform vet before any procedure.
Thin skin tears easily; watch during rough play.
Surprisingly calm indoors despite sprint capability.
