The breed
Where the Bernedoodle comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.
About the Bernedoodle
The Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog x Poodle cross, usually bred as a large companion with a teddy-bear coat and a friendly family reputation. The important caveat is that Bernedoodles are not standardized like AKC breeds. Adult size, coat type, shedding, exercise needs, and temperament depend heavily on whether the Poodle parent is standard or smaller, which generation the dog is, and what the individual parents are like.
Living with a Bernedoodle can be rewarding for people who want a social, trainable, larger companion and are ready for grooming. Many are affectionate, playful, and people-oriented. Some are mellow like many Berners, while others inherit more Poodle drive and need more mental work. Meeting both parents is more useful than relying on the designer-breed label.
Health claims need restraint. Hybrid vigor does not erase parent-breed disease risk. Local data flags hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, von Willebrand's disease, skin allergies, eye conditions, and PRA. Bernese Mountain Dogs bring orthopedic disease, cancer risk including histiocytic sarcoma, bloat/GDV, and a relatively short lifespan. Poodles can contribute Addison's disease, PRA and other eye disease, sebaceous adenitis, von Willebrand's disease, and orthopedic concerns.
Living with a Bernedoodle
Bernedoodles are often affectionate, smart, playful, and social. They can do well with children, but large adolescents may be bouncy and mouthy. Many are friendly with other dogs, though socialization still matters.
Training should focus on leash manners, calm greetings, grooming cooperation, body handling, and recall. Some are sensitive, and some are stubborn when adolescent, so positive consistency is more reliable than force.
Daily care
Feeding, exercise, and coat — plus how the routine shifts from puppy to senior.
Feeding a Bernedoodle
Medium-large hybrid breed with variable size and coat. Calorie needs depend on adult size, sex, neuter status, and activity; crosses can still inherit parent-breed health risks.
Key nutrients
- —omega-3
- —glucosamine
- —high-quality protein
Portion notes: Two meals daily; portion to size since adults range 50-90 lbs.
Exercise & enrichment
Bernedoodles need moderate daily exercise plus training and enrichment. Larger dogs need controlled growth and joint-aware activity during puppyhood. Feed to expected adult size, body condition, age, neuter status, and workload rather than assuming one doodle portion fits all.
Grooming routine
Most Bernedoodles need serious coat care. Wavy or curly coats should be brushed to the skin several times weekly and groomed professionally on a schedule. Dense coat can hide mats, skin irritation, ear problems, and weight gain. Keep ears clean and dry, nails short, and teeth brushed.
The Bernedoodle through the years
Bernedoodle puppies need socialization, grooming practice, controlled growth, leash foundations, and handling around ears, feet, mouth, and coat.
Adult Bernedoodles need coat maintenance, measured meals, joint-aware exercise, and monitoring for lameness, itching, ear odor, eye changes, lumps, or appetite shifts.
Senior Bernedoodles benefit from weight control, arthritis support, dental care, lump checks, lower-impact activity, and prompt workups for pain, breathing changes, or appetite loss.
