Catahoula Leopard Dog

The Catahoula Leopard Dog, often called the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is a tough American working breed associated with Louisiana stock work, hog hunting, and all-purpose farm use. It is in AKC Foundation Stock Service rather than fully AKC-ranked, and it is recognized by UKC. The striking merle or leopard pattern is famous, but the job matters more than the coat.

Living with a Catahoula is usually a poor fit for casual owners. Many are loyal, independent, energetic, assertive, and protective of home territory. They were not developed to be decorative couch dogs; they need work, structure, space, training, and owners comfortable with intensity. A bored Catahoula can become destructive, noisy, reactive, or difficult to contain.

Health planning should be practical and color-aware. Local data flags hip dysplasia, deafness, merle-related eye abnormalities, and bloat/GDV. Catahoula and veterinary sources discuss deafness and eye issues, especially in dogs with heavy white or merle patterns. That does not mean every merle Catahoula is unhealthy, but BAER hearing testing, eye evaluation, and responsible merle breeding choices matter.

Catahoulas are usually loyal, watchful, independent, and high-drive. They can be affectionate with family and useful working dogs, but many are reserved or suspicious with strangers. They may be assertive with other dogs and have strong prey and stock drive.

Children need supervision because the breed is powerful, busy, and physical. Training should be consistent, fair, and job-based, with early socialization, leash control, recall foundations, and impulse control. This is not usually a first-time-owner breed.
