The breed

Where the Cavapoo comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.

Overview

About the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x Poodle cross, usually bred as a small companion with a soft expression and a low-to-moderate shedding coat. Because it is a crossbreed rather than a standardized breed, size, coat, shedding, and temperament vary by parent size, generation, and breeder choices. A Cavapoo should be evaluated through its parents, not through a generic designer label.

Living with a Cavapoo often means living with a people-focused dog that wants close contact. Many are affectionate, playful, gentle, and adaptable. Some are more Spaniel-like and cuddly; others are more Poodle-like and busy. They can suit apartment life if exercise, grooming, and separation training are handled, but they are not automatically low-maintenance.

Health planning should take the Cavalier side seriously. Local data flags mitral valve disease, patellar luxation, PRA, syringomyelia, and hip dysplasia. Cavaliers are known for mitral valve disease and Chiari-like malformation/syringomyelia concerns, while Poodles can contribute PRA, Addison's disease, patellar luxation in smaller sizes, and other eye or orthopedic issues. Crossbreeding does not guarantee escape from either parent breed's risks.

Temperament

Living with a Cavapoo

Cavapoos are often affectionate, friendly, sensitive, and eager to be near people. They can do well with gentle children and other dogs, but small size and Cavalier softness require respectful handling.

Some struggle with being alone, so crate comfort, gradual absences, and independent enrichment should start early. Training should be positive and consistent, with attention to barking, grooming cooperation, leash manners, and polite greetings.

Nutrition

Feeding a Cavapoo

Cavalier × Poodle. Calorie needs vary with adult size, age, neuter status, and activity. Heart health from the Cavalier side is the main dietary concern.

Key nutrients

  • taurine
  • omega-3
  • dental support

Portion notes: Two small meals daily.

Exercise

Exercise & enrichment

Cavapoos need daily walks, play, and training, but most are not endurance dogs. Feed to body condition, size, age, neuter status, and activity; toy and miniature mixes gain weight quickly when treats are not counted.

Grooming

Grooming routine

Shedding · moderate

Wavy or curly Cavapoo coats usually need brushing several times a week and professional grooming. Floppy ears can trap moisture, so check for odor, redness, or discharge. Brush teeth, trim nails, and watch eyes for discharge or squinting.

Life stages

The Cavapoo through the years

Puppy

Cavapoo puppies need socialization, alone-time practice, grooming foundations, dental handling, and careful monitoring for heart murmurs, knee issues, or neurologic pain signs.

Adult

Adult Cavapoos need coat care, measured meals, dental care, heart monitoring discussions, and prompt evaluation of coughing, exercise intolerance, scratching at the neck, pain, or wobbliness.

Senior

Senior Cavapoos benefit from cardiac monitoring, dental planning, lower-impact exercise, arthritis support, and prompt workups for cough, breathing changes, appetite shifts, or pain.

Frequently asked

Cavapoo questions, answered.

Are Cavapoos hypoallergenic?+
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Some Cavapoos shed less, but coat and allergen tolerance vary by individual and generation.
Do Cavapoos still get Cavalier heart disease?+
They can inherit Cavalier-side risk. Ask about heart exams and family history for mitral valve disease.
What is syringomyelia?+
It is a painful neurologic condition associated with skull and brain/spinal-fluid anatomy in Cavaliers. Neck scratching, pain, or wobbliness deserves veterinary evaluation.
Are Cavapoos easy apartment dogs?+
Often they can adapt, but they still need exercise, grooming, training, and alone-time skills.
What health testing should I ask about?+
Ask about Cavalier cardiac screening, patellas, hips, eyes, PRA testing, syringomyelia/Chiari-like history, and the health testing done on both parents.
How long do Cavapoos live?+
Cavapoos typically live 12-15 years. Good nutrition, regular vet care, and weight management are the three biggest factors in reaching the top of that range.
How big do Cavapoos get?+
Adult Cavapoos typically weigh 9-25 lbs and stand 9-14 inches at the shoulder. That makes them a small breed.
How much exercise does a Cavapoo need?+
Cavapoos are a moderate-activity breed. Plan on 45-90 minutes of walks and play per day. Mental stimulation (training, puzzle toys) matters as much as physical exercise.
What health problems do Cavapoos commonly have?+
Cavapoos are most prone to: mitral valve disease (from Cavalier), patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, syringomyelia, hip dysplasia. Preventive vet visits, a quality diet, and weight management reduce risk on most of these. Reputable breeders screen for the genetic conditions.
Are Cavapoos hard to groom?+
Cavapoos need high grooming — daily brushing, regular professional grooming (every 4-8 weeks), coat maintenance. Their curly coat doesn't shed much but mats easily — professional grooming is usually necessary.
What should I feed a Cavapoo?+
Cavalier × Poodle. Calorie needs vary with adult size, age, neuter status, and activity. Heart health from the Cavalier side is the main dietary concern. Key nutrients to look for: taurine, omega-3, dental support.
Are Cavapoos good for first-time owners?+
Cavapoos are generally suitable for first-time owners with basic commitment. They're gentle, affectionate, playful. Plan for consistent training from day one.
