The breed

Where the Cockapoo comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.

Overview

About the Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is a Cocker Spaniel x Poodle cross and one of the older popular companion crosses. It is usually marketed as cheerful, affectionate, and lower-shedding, but individual dogs vary. American Cocker, English Cocker, toy or miniature Poodle ancestry, generation, and the actual parents all shape the adult dog more than the name alone.

Living with a Cockapoo often means balancing a sociable companion temperament with real coat and ear maintenance. Many are friendly, playful, people-oriented, and trainable. Some are soft and sensitive; others are busy, birdy, or barky. They can be excellent family dogs in prepared homes, but they need grooming, dental care, ear checks, and training like any other dog.

Health planning should follow the Cocker and Poodle sides. Local data flags patellar luxation, PRA, ear infections, hip dysplasia, and allergies. Cocker Spaniels are known for ear disease, eye disease, skin/allergy problems, and orthopedic concerns. Poodles can contribute PRA, Addison's disease, patellar luxation in smaller sizes, and coat/ear maintenance issues. A Cockapoo is not automatically healthier because it is a cross.

Temperament

Living with a Cockapoo

Cockapoos are often affectionate, cheerful, and people-focused. Many do well with children and other dogs, but socialization and respectful handling still matter.

Training should be positive and consistent, with early work on barking, jumping, grooming cooperation, recall, and alone-time. Some inherit spaniel softness and do poorly with harsh correction; others inherit Poodle cleverness and need more mental work than expected.

Nutrition

Feeding a Cockapoo

Cocker × Poodle. Calorie needs vary with adult size, coat type, neuter status, and activity. Ear care and coat maintenance are daily.

Key nutrients

  • omega-3
  • biotin

Portion notes: Two meals daily.

Exercise

Exercise & enrichment

Cockapoos need daily walks, play, and training. Some are moderate companions, while others have real sporting-dog energy. Feed to adult size, body condition, age, neuter status, and activity rather than a fixed designer-breed portion.

Grooming

Grooming routine

Shedding · moderate

Most Cockapoos need frequent brushing and scheduled grooming. The ears deserve special attention because spaniel-type ears and dense coat can reduce airflow and retain moisture. Check ears for odor, redness, discharge, or head shaking. Brush teeth and trim nails regularly.

Life stages

The Cockapoo through the years

Puppy

Cockapoo puppies need grooming practice, ear handling, bite inhibition, crate comfort, socialization, and gentle exposure to brushing, dryers, nail trims, and tooth brushing.

Adult

Adult Cockapoos need coat care, ear checks, measured meals, dental care, and monitoring for itching, ear infections, eye changes, knee skipping, or lameness.

Senior

Senior Cockapoos benefit from dental planning, arthritis support, eye checks, lower-impact exercise, and prompt evaluation of appetite, hearing, vision, skin, or mobility changes.

Frequently asked

Cockapoo questions, answered.

Are Cockapoos hypoallergenic?+
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Some Cockapoos shed less, but coat and allergen tolerance vary by individual and generation.
Do Cockapoos get ear infections?+
They can. Floppy ears, hair, moisture, and allergies can all contribute, so regular checks and veterinary-guided cleaning matter.
Are Cockapoos good family dogs?+
Often yes, especially in homes ready for grooming, training, and respectful handling.
Are Cockapoos healthier than Cockers?+
Not automatically. They can inherit Cocker and Poodle health risks, so parent testing matters.
What health testing should I ask about?+
Ask about eyes, patellas, hips, PRA testing, ear/skin allergy history, Addison's disease, and the health testing completed on both parents.
How long do Cockapoos live?+
Cockapoos typically live 12-15 years. Good nutrition, regular vet care, and weight management are the three biggest factors in reaching the top of that range.
How big do Cockapoos get?+
Adult Cockapoos typically weigh 12-25 lbs and stand 10-15 inches at the shoulder. That makes them a small breed.
How much exercise does a Cockapoo need?+
Cockapoos are a moderate-activity breed. Plan on 45-90 minutes of walks and play per day. Mental stimulation (training, puzzle toys) matters as much as physical exercise.
What health problems do Cockapoos commonly have?+
Cockapoos are most prone to: patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, ear infections, hip dysplasia, allergies. Preventive vet visits, a quality diet, and weight management reduce risk on most of these. Reputable breeders screen for the genetic conditions.
Are Cockapoos hard to groom?+
Cockapoos need high grooming — daily brushing, regular professional grooming (every 4-8 weeks), coat maintenance. Their curly coat doesn't shed much but mats easily — professional grooming is usually necessary.
What should I feed a Cockapoo?+
Cocker × Poodle. Calorie needs vary with adult size, coat type, neuter status, and activity. Ear care and coat maintenance are daily. Key nutrients to look for: omega-3, biotin.
Are Cockapoos good for first-time owners?+
Cockapoos are generally suitable for first-time owners with basic commitment. They're friendly, affectionate, intelligent. Plan for consistent training from day one.
