The breed
Where the Pembroke Welsh Corgi comes from, and what living with one actually asks of you.
About the Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a short-legged Welsh herding breed known for a foxlike outline, big ears, and a bold personality. The low build is part of its cattle-driving history, but it also makes weight control and back-aware management important in modern homes.
Living with a Pembroke usually means living with a smart, social, bossy little herder. Many are affectionate, funny, and adaptable, but they bark, shed, chase movement, and may nip heels if not taught better outlets. Small size does not mean low drive.
Health planning should include hips, spine, eyes, degenerative myelopathy, seizures, obesity, and von Willebrand's disease. Local data flags hip dysplasia, IVDD, DM, PRA, epilepsy, obesity, and vWD. DM is neurologic and progressive; it should not be confused with hip dysplasia or IVDD, which cause orthopedic/spinal pain and mobility changes.
Living with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Pembrokes are usually bright, affectionate, alert, and confident. They often do well with children and dogs when socialized, but herding nips and barking should be redirected early. Training should be positive and consistent, with recall, leash manners, quiet cues, handling, and impulse control. They are food-motivated, so use treats thoughtfully and keep weight lean.
Daily care
Feeding, exercise, and coat — plus how the routine shifts from puppy to senior.
Feeding a Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Low-slung herder. Calorie needs vary with size, age, neuter status, and activity; weight management is critical for back health.
Key nutrients
- —glucosamine
- —omega-3
- —fiber (for satiety)
Watch out for
- ×high-calorie fillers
Portion notes: Two measured meals daily. No free-feeding. Weigh monthly.
Exercise & enrichment
Pembrokes need daily walks, training, and low-impact games. Avoid repeated high jumps and keep them lean to reduce stress on the spine and hips. Feed to body condition, age, neuter status, and activity rather than a fixed range.
Grooming routine
The double coat sheds heavily and needs regular brushing, especially during coat blows. Brush teeth, trim nails, check ears, and use ramps or block furniture jumping where sensible. Watch for back pain, dragging paws, or hind-end weakness.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi through the years
Pembroke puppies need socialization, back-aware habits, handling, recall games, and early boundaries around barking, nipping, and jumping.
Adult Pembrokes need measured meals, exercise, coat care, and monitoring for back pain, lameness, seizures, eye changes, or hind-end weakness.
Senior Pembrokes benefit from weight control, non-slip flooring, arthritis support, lower-impact games, dental care, and prompt evaluation of mobility changes.
